SAGGINGVILLE MINUTE
Marquee shines bright and tall
The stage spotlight says it all
A purpose to perform
Music and drama the norm
A time when lives are torn apart
Separation causing a depart
My name is Jordan, I travelled far and wide
I don’t know what my life is suppose to provide
Determined with desire
I live in the Deep South
A place called SAGGINGVILLE, South Carolina
It’s where the Sun and Heat come together
Many days, I walked down dirt roads in my bare feet
Blisters would often be found beneath my feet soles
Shoes served no purpose
Miles to towns and having no car
Walking and thinking
I would often be found by the river playing my Harmonica
The song would be show me my Bayou
Glazing at the river and observing my reflection
As I began to see my image, I seem to wonder
Being a poor boy with rich inspiration
Being a Black boy voiceless and feeling useless
There was an Old Man named Nat who used to tell me his tails of SAGGINGVILLE
and his own life in being beaten when he was a Slave
He used to tell once he tried to escape and he had gotten on the other side of the river, but was caught by the slave master, and he was beaten beyond compare
There was a lot Black Folklore experience in teachings
My parents once told me Jordan as long as you have aspirations, let no one take that away from you
Life shows you your own guidelines and sets the course of living
There is always hope, but believe
The Sun is warmth, but affection for one’s self and soul is what matters
This Black boy will make something of himself
Despite the doubters
I will proceed and won’t look back
Forward to reality
New life could be New York City
A Gateway to a new beginning
Now let me walk back home
My path of destiny a waits
My time is now
The Sun is going down
A Black boy is and will always see
I will become a Black Man
Chosen to fulfill
God’s will
Stand and be still
Patience
Knowing I can
Walking shoes that shall
No soles about it
Walking on and being decided
Value in life and being counted
Living proof
Still in my youth
Black boy thinking with a Black Man spirit
It shall be done.
