Safe Harbor
by Michael R. Burch
for Kevin N. Roberts
The sea at night seems
an alembic of dreams—
the moans of the gulls,
the foghorns’ bawlings.
A century late
to be melancholy,
I watch the last shrimp boat as it steams
to safe harbor again.
In the twilight she gleams
with a festive light,
done with her trawlings,
ready to sleep . . .
Deep, deep, in delight
glide the creatures of night,
elusive and bright
as the poet’s dreams.
"Safe Harbor" was written by Michael R. Burch in 2001 after a discussion about Romanticism in the...
Poems about Animals by Michael R. Burch
Animal Poems by Michael R. Burch Nature Poems by Michael R. Burch LIMERICKS Dot Spotted by Michael R. Burch There once was a leopardess, Dot, who indignantly answered: "I’ll not! The gents are impressed with the way that I’m dressed. I wouldn’t change even one spot." Clyde Lied! by Michael R. Burch There once was a mockingbird, Clyde, who bragged of his prowess, but lied. To his new wife he sighed, "When again, gentle bride?" "Nevermore!" bright-eyed Raven replied. The Trouble with Elephants: a Word to the Wise by Michael R. Burch<...1
LITANY OF EXCESSIVE AGE
My friend! You, who also hid in a similar humming bear skin, like myself, you alone know the Truth: Flora and Fauna, just as you would look for good luck nowadays in vain, wherever you look, cheap, small-scale side characters are flaunting back and forth, so that even the hoe handles are slowly sticking out of their mouths.
Little kings with greedy lives are nesting ugly and weedy in this big world; the earth-deaf depth - fearful - rarely announces a decipherment. Now more and more false prophets and gamblers come and go uninvited and unsolicited, because everyone is their own blacksmith. Cs?selek, sürhe-band pours out the hypocrite-prophecies, and while the average could get anything early enough, the next day the order changes again and new ones can come to the fore, who, of course, don't understand anything, they are just party-face showcase figures of this current confused Jelen .
Today tells people: "Just cheat, rob, enjoy your...
TRASHED CONCLUSION
The deeper we get into ourselves, the bigger and more the animal, instinctive and visceral will be in us. Instead of taboo-breaking sermons, it would be time to finally confess everything: Who made a mistake? Where and how?! They open beneath me, like the poisonous sewers the floodplains of the inner Spirit; the dirt of our memories and deeds keeps swirling, tossing and turning.
Pleasure and joy are interwoven, as well as the danger of a tightrope walker, distorted disorders of eternal manipulation and compulsion to conform. Even as the single-celled Existence bustles with the hidden insidious intention, with which one can harm others voluntarily and in a tyrannical way, the Indifference of abject emptiness and inability to act bursts into the unwinnable Future. - Fearful -, the exculpatory morality can no longer override anything, it cannot change anything about the pre-ordained rules of the game of chance, which the petty Tyrannians brought upon us.

Something still remains
Something will still remain, like a palm-sized, tiny fragrant ember under the slumbering ashes, an amber heart preserved in wall recesses, a romantic holy lock on the bridge of sighs. A single mirror, which is split in two with the edge of a knife, by a whole series of secret glances and betraying gestures. Even a shining lady's profile, with whom we could still believe that we could fall in love with pure, faithful words.
Something in us remains ineradicably, as the footprints written in the sand by the hero-lovers from Time slowly recede, the coveted petrified snail house. In the mahogany shadows, your girlish head is tilted to the side, when you are thinking about your zigzagging thoughts.
You can send the ever-beautiful shine of your superstitious doe-eye as a gift, while the ashen-honest memory of your face was half-fading. Your imagined family life, the laughing stomping of your children while they build a sandcastle and you rememb...

...FATE-YET
I'm sure we've sold and made ourselves available in a million different ways; in defiance of looming Fates, and deceived, tricked, and lied to loves, which we could still believe could be her hopeful conception. We have been immersed daily for a long time now in self-deceiving filthy foams, which, like spiral nets, surrounded us with their false or even false values, while we could well guess that all false, tyrannical selfishness was also broken and destroyed a long time ago.
We volunteer to serve the blind Hope that sets the bait with the mare, saying: maybe even the average person has some slight chance, because we would like to believe and believe that Man can be repaired and changed for Good, if he does not distort his intentions and qualities and gives. All illusions are now worn out; the cursed Fate-imposed portion of Being. Romantic dreams, like meaningless houses of cards, fall early and fade away. In their place, new instinct-filth and ev...
